Tooth pains and aches are one of the most throbbing and intolerable pains that you can have. Although these are not life threatening, they impair your daily activities, making the pain too severe to endure. In such a case, you will either rush to a dentist to get rid of tooth pain at emergency. However, here is a simple to use alternative that can help you to get rid of the pain or at least reduce the pain.
Step 1:
The most important reason of tooth pain is when food particles get stuck in your teeth gaps. Hence, before you start your at-home remedies, you need to make sure that the teeth are thoroughly and quickly cleaned. If some food particles have been lodged in the teeth gaps, you need to remove them. In order to dislodge the particles, you can –
- Carefully use a dental floss through the teeth gaps.
- Rinse and swish your mouth with warm water. Spit out the water and this will remove any loosened food particle.
Step 2:
Unless and until the pain reduces or you know why the pain has occurred, you need to make sure that the affected tooth is not involved in any oral activity. Do not chew with that tooth or from that area. Instead, you can –
- Use dental wax or a chewing gum to cover the affected tooth. If it is broken, you need to cover it with temporary filler. These work as very good dental fillers for temporary spans.
- If you do not have access to any such products, you can easily by them from the drug stores. There are many temporary teeth filling kits that use zinc oxide or other similar materials as fillers. These can protect your teeth from pressure.
Step 3:
If the pain is unbearable, you can use the over the counter pain killers such as ibuprofen paracetamol or acetaminophen. These will reduce the pain for the time being and give you the time to visit a dentist. Make sure that you follow the proper dosage.
- In most cases, these over the counter pain killers recommend you to take one or two pills in every four to six hours, depending on the severity of the pain.
- These are easily available in the drug stores.
- Do not directly apply the pain killer such as aspirin on the affected tooth.
Step 4:
You can also use the over the counter pain killer topical ointments that contain benzocaine in most cases. However, always keep in mind that these must be applied externally and should not be injected. Children are in some cases intolerant to this drug and they should not be given these ointments as this can lead to a condition called methemoglobinemia.
Step 5:
Apply cold compress on the area. Wrap ice cubes in a plastic bag or in a piece of cloth and apply it on the area for about 10 to 15 minutes. Take a break of about 10 to 15 minutes and then reapply. If the pain still persists, visit a 24 hour emergency dentist near you. The dentist will be able to diagnose the cause and give proper medication.
